Harra

Botanical name: Terminalia chebula
It is a moderate or large deciduous tree, attaining 25-30 m in height. This tree yields small, ribbed and nut-like fruits which are picked when still green and then peeled, boiled and little sugar is added in the syrup and used as preserves; this preserve is called ‘Hareer Ka Murabba’  in Urdu language. 

The seed of the fruit, which has an elliptical shape, is an abrasive seed enveloped by a fleshy and firm pulp. It is regarded as a universal panacea in the Ayurvedic Medicine and in the Traditional Tibetan medicine. It is reputed to cure blindness and it is believed to inhibit the growth of malignant tumours.

The dry nut’s peel is used to cure cold-related nagging coughs. The bark/peel of the nut is placed in the cheek. Although the material does not dissolve, the resulting saliva, bitter in taste, is believed to have medicinal qualities to cure cold related coughs. Its fruit has digestive, anti-inflammatory, anthelmintic, cardiotonic, aphrodisiac and restorative properties and is additionally beneficial in flatulence, constipation, piles, cough and colds.
The fruit contains a constituent which has a wide antibacterial and antifungal spectrum and also inhibits growth of E-coli, the most common organism responsible for urinary tract infection. The fruit pulp exhibits laxative properties.
Uses:

The fruit pulp is used for curing and cleansing ulcers and wounds. Gargling with a decoction made from the fruits is very good for fighting oral ulcers, stomatitis and sore throat.
It is used by conjunctivitis patients, for relieving the eyelids.
Terminalia chebula fruit, mixed with sunthi powder and hot water, is used for treating asthma and curing hiccups.
This fruit is used for fighting many diseases including leprosy, chronic as well as intermittent fever, narcosis, diarrhea and anorexia.
They are used in the treatments of various vaginal discharges such as leucorrhea and urethral discharges such as spermatorrhea for their anti-inflammatory and astringent.
Powdered Haritaki is used along with ghee and honey for curing anemia.
A decoction of this fruit is used to fight against hepatitis and obesity.
